Faces vs. Layers

A cube is built in three layers — top, middle, and bottom — stacked like a sandwich.

Each layer is a slice that turns as one piece. The U face turns the top layer; the D face turns the bottom layer.

Key difference: a face is one side you look at; a layer is a whole slice that slides. Methods like LBL solve the cube one layer at a time.
